Sport: The weather conditions have been very changable of late, resulting in a variety of methods proving successful. During the milder spells Buzzers, nymphs, humongous, montanas and cats whiskers have all scored well. Norman Chapman caught 12 trout including a superb 6lb blue, he kept on move around the lake covering as much water a possible with a team of nymphs. Mr J K Lowrie landed mixture of 12 rainbows and blues the best of which was over 7lbs, he found that a pink humongous twitched back along the bottom was most productive. Ian Stanworth (pictured below) used a cats whisker to tempt two double figure rainbows in a row, he then added a third trout to lift his bag weight to 23lbs 8oz. Frank Hartley braved the elements on a particuly blustery day and was rewarded with a cracking catch of 13 fish. Frank a fished team of buzzers to great effect and said that white patterns were the most effective. Dennis Tallentyre had an incredible day last week. His first trout was a blue of 7lbs 8oz, this was followed by steady stream of rainbows and blues, he then landed a brownie of 3lbs+, which was shortly followed by a rainbow of 13lbs 8oz. He finished a productive half day session with 12 trout to the net, all of which fell to a gold head cats fished slowly along the bottom. Incidently Darren Mayor also used a white buzzer to tempt a beautiful 14lb 8oz brownie which was returned to fight another day.
During the colder, frosty periods the trout’s foraging activity is greatly reduced. However, they will still take flies and once hooked they fight like mad due to the greater level of disolved oxygen found in cold water. The best methods during these cold snaps usually involve presenting your flies statically for the trout to pick up on passing. The initial take is often quite gentle so it is really important to stay in contact with your flies and allow no slack line to develope. This can be best achieved by long lining buzzers, fishing the washing line or hanging flies under a bung. These three methods have worked well over the last few days. Roy Horrocks caught 10 trout on a yellow egg fished under the bung, Derek Moore caught 10 on a cat booby on a washing line rig and Mr A Wilkinson also caught 10 trout on cats booby and buzzers. Norman Chapman returned this weekend and had another great day the best of his fish was the 11lbs 2oz rainbow pictured below. His bag of four weighed 19lbs 6oz.
Look forward to seeing you soon. Tight Lines Ben
